Friday Free Training Events for 2011

Friday Free Trainings provide VCAN members with opportunities to expand their skill sets at little or not cost to their agencies. These one-day training sessions offer hands-on or lecture classes to members on a variety of crime and intelligence analysis topics. First Friday Trainings are FREE to VCAN members and cost $40 for non-members.

Instructor Lynn Brewer will conduct this hands-on class which will cover crime analysis formulas, charting, text functions, date and time functions, data analysis and pivot tables.

Using Excel for Crime Analysis

January 7, 2011, 9am to 4pm, Newport News Police Department

Instructor Jennifer Willoughby will cover topics such as anti-abortion groups and their activity in Virginia, and anti-government groups (militia, anarchists, & sovereign citizens) and their activity in Virginia.

Domestic Terrorism Intelligence in Virginia

February 11, 2011, 9am to 3:30pm, Virginia State Police Academy (Richmond)

Instructor Mary Craige will cover data mining in ATAC, using the advanced tactical analysis tools, trend manager, and the statistical analysis tools.  NOTE:  PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOP WITH ATAC INSTALLED!!!

Using ATAC for Tactical Crime Analysis

March 11, 2011, 9am to 4pm, Prince William Police Department (Manassas Sub-Station)

Dr. Isaac Van Patten (Radford University) will cover both research and experience related to serial offenders.  Discussion will focus on serial property and violent offenders and how research in this field can be applied to tactical crime analysis and intelligence analysis.

Instructor Jessica LeBlanc will focus on using inexpensive tools to map cell phone data for investigative purposes. The instructor will show students how to use free software (Google Maps), inexpensive (MapPoint) and more robust software (ArcView) to display and analyze cell phone records.
